Elementary School Science

This course prepares students to effectively teach science to students in grades K-5 through the use of inquiry-based, hands-on instructional methods. Students learn instructional strategies to teach the four areas of scientific literacy: science content knowledge, scientific processes, scientific attitudes and values, and higher level thinking skills. Kentucky science teaching standards are addressed throughout the course.

Aquatic Ecology for Teachers

The sciences of biology, geology, chemistry, and physical sciences are integrated to teach about aquatic ecology though a field-based study of the Ohio River and streams. The course is taught at the Thomas More Ohio River Field Station in a two-week workshop format. Credit for this course is available through the departments of Education and Biology.

Reading the River
June 13-18, 2004

An interdisciplinary study of the Licking River: water quality, land use impact, economics, culture, and classroom applications.  This is a 6-day, overnight field experience.  Teachers travel from the headwaters of the Licking River in eastern Kentucky to the mouth of the river in Northern Kentucky. Requires permission of the instructor.

Energy & Education: Making the Connections

June 14-18, 2004

This course is offered through NKU to participants of the KY NEED summer workshop. The course will provide educators the opportunity to visit energy facilities and installations in Eastern Kentucky in order to develop a stronger understanding of energy production, consumption, and efficiency.  For further information, please contact Karen P.
